Lassa Fever: Ministry, Council Partner On Sanitation
Following the outbreak of
lassa fever in the state, the Rivers State Ministry of Environment says it will partners with Local Government Councils to ensure mass participation in this months environmental sanitation exercise.
The exercise comes up this Saturday 30th January 2016 and will last between the hours of 7 to 10 am.
The Commissioner for Environment, Professor Roseline Konya, who said this in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt said that the exercise will be effectively enforced throughout the state.
She said that mass participation in sanitation exercise has become necessary in view of the threats posed to the state by lassa fever virus and warned against playing football during the exercise, adding that anyone caught will be prosecuted.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Government has warned residents of the state against living in a dirty and filty environment.
Commissioner for Environment, Professor Roseline Konya, said that dirty environment is a breeding ground for rats and other disease carrying organisms.
She stressed the need for people to clear bushes and grasses around their surroundings while refuse dumpsites be fumigated regularly to keep away rats and other diseases carrying organisms.
She also said that the ministry is working hard to ensure that refuse contractors effectively dispose off refuse to avoid the spread of diseases.
According to her, Environmental health officers from the ministry have been directed to make regular visits to markets in Port Harcourt City and environs to ensure proper disposal of refuse by traders.
The commissioner also called on Nigerians to imbibe the culture of hands washing and use of sanitizers to keep away diseases, adding the ministry will continue to support programmes that will return Port Harcourt city and environs to its garden city status.
