Church Boosts Evangelism Via Football

Para-atheletes in action
The Anglican
Archdiocese of Enugu has disclosed that it will establish a football club as part of efforts to use sports as a tool for evangelism.
The church also said that it would use the football club to encourage the development of youth football.
The Archbishop of the diocese, Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, made this known in an interview with newsmen in Enugu on Wednesday.
He said that the church’s focus on football as a tool for evangelism was based on the realisation of the need to change strategy.
“You find out that now people are crazy with sports and the only thing that seems to unite Nigerians is football.
“So, the church must begin to have a paradigm shift to find a way of evangelising.
“Most of these youths seek (for) favour and seek (for) pleasure in the field playing games.
“Why can’t we do what is called football evangelism or go to where they relax and preach the gospel there; provide avenues for these children; buy football.’’
The cleric further said that the diocese planned to establish a football club to be known as “Good Shepherd Bombers FC” in line with its vision.
“This football team owned by the diocese will play against other teams, in addition to raising awareness that we can use to create ministry, create spirituality and evangelism through recreation.’’
