Unemployment: Rivers Youth Want Wike To Create Jobs
Unemployed youths in
Rivers State, have appealed to the State Governor, Chief Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, to create job opportunities for them to improve their standard of living.
The youths made the appeal in separate interviews with The Tide at the weekend in Port Harcourt.
They said the appeal became necessary after some critical observation of hardship on the side of young people as a result of poverty.
One of the youths from Ikwerre Local Government Area, Mr Shanka Ejinmah, stressed the need for the government to crate job opportunities and also introduce more youths empowerment programmes.
He said such moves would not only place food on the table but will drive away the urge to return to arms struggle.
Ejinmah reasoned, that hunger and poverty are the major causes of restiveness among the youths, saying that government must strive to address it.
He also called on the state government to target creation of good and rewarding programmes capable of alleviating the suffering of the people.
Another youth, Emperor Brown, said job creation and employment opportunities was key in any system.
He said any government that failed to provide job opportunities for its youth, is likely to end poorly.
Brown, said since the youths are believed to be leaders of tomorrow, the nicest way to sustain the economy by any government was to train and employ young ones who will take over the mantle of leadership.
Others regretted that expatriates are still trooping to the State to handle some projects even at the expense of the unemployed indigenes.
They also blamed their predicament on those they described as sit-tight employees, saying some of them have refused to retire at the right time.
They have therefore called on the head of service, Mr. Rufus Godwins, to carryout detailed investigation into the civil service commission and fish out those who are due for retirement, saying it will pave way for the unemployment of new hands.
