COREN Tasks Technicians, Others On Registration
The Council for the Regu
lation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has advised engineering technicians, craftsmen and artisans to register with the council.
COREN’s President, Mr Kashim Ali, gave the advice at the closing of the 24th Engineering Assembly organised by the Council, recently.
He said there was the need for engineering technicians, craftsmen and artisans to register with the council to be guided by the ethics of the engineering profession.
“There have been improvements in the number of these categories of engineering technicians who have registered with the council.
“We are formulating ways to bring more of these categories to register and appreciate the ethics of the profession.
“We cannot afford to allow building companies to go to neighbouring countries to hire craftsmen because they believe our craftsmen are not proficient,” he said.
Ali urged engineers to uphold the ethics of the profession in all their activities, warning that the council would not condone any unprofessional act by members.
He appealed to registered engineers to report any breach of COREN code of conduct by their colleagues or government officials.
He said: “You have to be careful in your practice. You cannot offer to do what you are not registered by COREN to do.
“No unethical act would be tolerated among our registered members.
“As a registered member you should report to us any engineer who has violated our code of conduct. You have to do it to protect image of the profession.”
The COREN President called on the three tiers of government to utilise the services of indigenous engineers to enable them contribute their skills in science, technology and innovation.
He urged governments to ensure that expatriates engineers were only allowed to work in Nigeria when it was proven that no indigenous engineer could perform the task.
