Senator Wants FG To Reactivate Mambilla Power Project
Senator Adamu Aliero has
urged President Muhammadu Buhari to fulfil his campaign promises by resuscitating the Mambilla power plant and other generating plants across the country.
Aliero who represents Kebbi Central Senatorial District at the Senate, made the call in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.
He said that the Mambilla plant, when resuscitated, along with other turbines across the country had the capacity to generate additional 4000 megawatts of electricity.
He decried the negative impact of irregular power supply on the economy and said that the plant alone had the capacity to supply electricity to six states in the North-East.
According to him, the shortage of power in the country would have been avoided if the five hydropower plants, including Mambilla hydropower plant project, had been functional.
“The president had made a number of promises and one of the most important is improving the power sector.
“We have a lot of potential in hydropower. Mambilla alone, if resuscitated can generate about 2000 megawatts of electricity. That is more than 50 per cent of what we are generating now; unfortunately, we are not doing that,” he said.
He noted that the combined capacity of the turbines in the country could improve electricity by over 2000 megawatts but regretted that there is no gas to power them.
Aliero advised the President to learn from the mistakes of past governments by carrying out extensive study before embarking on any power project.
According to him, “you cannot just wake up and bring in turbines without making arrangement to get gas to power them.”
He also urged the president to take a holistic look at the problem of power supply, including generation, transmission and distribution.
Aliero noted that transmission was a major problem in the power sector, adding that power generated was not often fully transmitted and as such, limited distribution.
“The transmission lines inherited from unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) are obsolete and weak, resulting in loss of energy during transmission,” he said.
