Rivers LG Poll, A Farce – Ichoku
A Port Harcourt-based
legal practitioner, Barr Emeka Ichoku has picked holes in the just-concluded local government election conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RISIEC), describing the process as a farce.
Ichoku, former chairman of the Ahoada branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), who spoke with The Tide in an exclusive interview in Port Harcourt, at the weekend, said the hurriedly-conducted local government polls was a waste of time and resources of the state.
Ichoku said the Rivers LG poll defied a court action challenging its validity, as well as flouted the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission which refused to release the list of voters for the election.
He said such legal and institutional lapses that characterised the “ill-futed” local government election in Rivers State would be addressed and the election will be set aside legally.
Ichoku also commended Governor Nyesom Wike, for appointing an acting Chief Judge and President of the Customary Court of Appeal in the state as well as opening the court for normal judicial proceedings after one year of judiciary doldrums.
