Institute Lauds Emergence Of Domestic Food Industry
The Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST) has Wednesday said that the decline in the importation of foreign foods has led to the emergence of a robust domestic food industry.
NIFST President Dr Chijioke Osuji, made the observation in statement obtained by The Tide source in Lagos, on Wednesday.
“Our desire for the emergence of a very robust food industry appears to be coming true though slowly but steadily.
“It is noteworthy that whilst the Nigeria food imports are declining, the export of food commodities has maintained a steady rise.
“This trend is supported by increasing demand for home food by the Nigerians in diaspora,” it said.
The statement quoted Osuji as calling on members of the institute to focus more on the exportation of processed food business, currently controlled by non-members.
It also said that food items including vegetables, spices, palm oil, melon, yams, soup condiments, garri, and flowers among others are being offered in foreign shops overseas at a faster rate than ever.
The statement called on interested investors to study the export trade protocols as well as the requirements for achievement of certification from United State of America and member countries of the European Union.
“Entrepreneurs in the country are endowed with the knowledge and skills for development of these operations than untrained operators.
“However, we still need entrepreneurial and business management skills and the courage to tackle unique local difficulties,” it said.
It said NIFST would be offering training courses in food safety and food quality management systems including ISO 22000, which would be beneficial to prospective investors.
