Mixed Reactions Trail Trading On Used Clothes
Some residents of Port
Harcourt and environs have expressed mixed ideas on the trading and use of second-hand clothes otherwise known as “Bend-down or o.k clothes”.
While some welcomed the trading as a relief to so many families, in terms of financial burdens, others have posited that it has reduced the dignity of persons using and trading on them, as well as having psychological spiritual and health implications.
Mr. David Muzina, a civil servant said that the world was no longer safe, but full of wicked people who have made a lot of people to be more careful in life.
According to him, the issue of Ebola has opened people’s eyes, pointing out that some of the used clothes from Ebola patients which were not disinfected could actually be a means of spreading the disease to other countries and urged people to be careful on handling the second hand purchased clothes.
For Mrs Grace Okpara, a teacher by profession, many people have had an attack due to these second hand wears they bought, especially through some people that are agents of darkness.
She said, “there are cases where clothes or wears bought as second hand become a problem to the buyer. Such wears might have passed through some spiritual processes and impact negatively on the buyer, depending on his or her spiritual development.
Meanwhile, a trader in the fairy used clothes, Mrs Janeth Ishiaka, and popularly called, “Mama David”, has said that the trading of such has created employment to so many people, who are now engaged in such business and take care of themselves and dependants.
Apart from the employment, she said that the fairly used clothes have helped so many Nigerian families to meet up with the clothing demand of their children, with lasting quality and reduced prices.
She said it is cheaper to get some wears to the same quality from bend-down boutique, than can be got from the regular shops and super-markets.

NCDMB Partner Dafinone For Youths Technical Skills Training
Reports say that the training is designed to equip youths with practical technical skills for employment in the oil and gas and construction sectors, with emphasis on employability, safety, competence and self reliance.
In attendance at the flag-off ceremony this week, at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Hall, Effurun, were stakeholders, dignitaries, and political representatives, among others.
Dafinone, represented by his Chief of Staff, Adelabu Bodjor, said the initiative reflects a deliberate political investment in human capital development across Delta Central.
He explained that the training focuses on rigging and scaffolding, noting that “both are essential technical competencies required in industrial operations, construction projects, and oil and gas installations”.
Bodjor added, “The programme is intended to reduce dependency among youths by providing job-ready skills capable of supporting long-term economic opportunities and self-sufficiency. The initiative aligns with Senator Dafinone’s broader development agenda, which prioritises practical skill acquisition as a pathway to sustainable empowerment.”
Also addressing the participants, the NCDMB, Felix Omatsola Ogbe, represented by Mr. Teddy Bai, commended Dafinone for sponsoring the programme, describing it as “a timely response to critical manpower gaps in the industry”.
Bai explained that rigging and scaffolding remain safety-sensitive skills required across fabrication yards, offshore platforms, and construction sites, stressing that the programme bridges the gap between certification and practical competence.
He also charged the training consultant, OROH Contractors Limited, to maintain strict standards of professionalism, safety, and discipline, while urging participants to remain committed, focused, and disciplined throughout the exercise.
The Senate Liaison Officer for Sapele Local Government Area, Chief Patrick Akamuvba, , described the programme as a major step in strengthening human capital development in Delta Central.
Akamuvba said scaffolding and rigging skills are in high demand across residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects, noting that the training offers real employment opportunities for beneficiaries
He urged participants to prioritise knowledge and certification over short-term material expectations, stressing that discipline and seriousness would determine their long-term success.
He also cautioned youths against social vices and distractions, advising them to remain focused to maximise the opportunities provided by the programme.
