Speedboat Operators Hail Wrecks Removal On Waterways
Speedboat operators in
Okrika, Rivers State, have commended the recent move by the Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to remove all wrecks on the waterways.
The Chairman of Okrika speedboat Owners Association, Chief Sunday Opeya, made the commendation in a chat with our correspondent in Okrika at the weekend.
Opeya said the move would ensure safety of lives of the operators and ease navigation.
According to him, the authority in Port Harcourt had recently called on owners of abandoned wrecks to identify and remove them in their own interest and for the interest of maritime stakeholders in general, adding that such step needed commendation.
He said NIWA should hasten action in ensuring that the notice was adhered to by those concerned, so that the waterways would be free for navigation and safety even at low ebb.
The chairman noted that the wrecks along Okrika-Abuloma-Port Harcourt had caused a lot of havoc to the speed boat operators in the area, and that the step by NIWA, Port Harcourt Area is a welcomed development that would bring a great relief and succor to the operators as well as the speed boat owners because they cherished the lives of their passengers and their properties.
Opeya appealed to the management of NIWA not to relent in their efforts and also commended the Port Harcourt Area Manager, Alhaji Muhammed Dabai for his relentless efforts in ensuring safety in maritime activities in the state including workshops and seminars to enlighten the stakeholders on safety on sea and the waterways.
NIWA had in a recent publication in Port Harcourt issued two-week ultimatum to owners of abandoned wrecks to remove them immediately.
