A total of 36 vehicles
were impounded by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operation Unit (FOU) Zone C, Owerri, Imo State in the month of January 2015.
The Area Controller of the unit, Victor David Dimka disclosed this while briefing newsmen in his office in Owerri, recently.
Dimka said out of the figure, 14 were SUVs, 13 Cars, five trucks and four buses, adding that the command also recorded the seizure of 800 pieces of used tyres.
He disclosed that the unit had renewed its operational onslaught against the smugglers who want to sabotage the economy of the country and cut corners, and attributed their feat to series of innovations and training by the management aimed at reducing smuggling activities to the bearest minimum in the area.
The zone C unit boss said the seizure came from the various locations within the zone, and commended members of the public for their patriotism in providing relevant information on the activities of smugglers to the unit, assuring them that such highly classified information would be kept secret in line with the ethics of the profession.
“We have been trained, oriented and conscientised under the management of the Controller General of Customs (CGC), Abdullahi Dikko Inde, to meet our challenges and it is left for those still entrapped in smuggling to desist forthwith or be prepared to face the consequences of their act if arrested”, Dimka posited.
He, however, advised members of the public who wish to purchase vehicles to go through the official channels, clear with customs before the purchase, stressing that all illegally imported goods including vehicles must be impounded as ignorance of the law is no excuse as they are not ready to compromise the statutory duties or responsibilities of the establishment if caught.
