‘JUSUN Strike, An Invitation To Anarchy’
A cross-section of some
lawyers in Abuja on Wednesda’ described the ongoing strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) as a gradual invitation to anarchy in the country.
The lawyers, while speaking with our correspondent called on government to take an urgent step to put an end to the strike.
One of them, Uche Nwagu, said if government did not act swiftly to put an end to the strike, the country would be driven into a state of anarchy and confusion.
.“The implication of this strike may be brutal if adequate steps are not taken now.
“The government has not implemented the judgment on financial autonomy, in spite of the fact that it was fully aware of the judgment.
“This strike is not the first on this issue and the idea of constant strikes following union demands will take this country backward,’’ Nwagu said.
.He said the judiciary, as one of the three arms of government, was supposed to be independent like every other arms of government.
The lawyer said some people could take advantage of the strike and take the law into their hands, and thereby increase the crime rate in the country..
Also, Chijioke Kanu, another legal practitioner, charged the judiciary to use the machinery within the system to force government to comply with the court order.
“The judiciary is supposed to bring application for committal of proceedings for disobedience of court order.
“The court should have gone extra miles to use this remedy to get the government to obey the Federal High Court judgment on financial autonomy of the judiciary before now.
“The courts in Nigeria are established by the Constitution. It is the legal duty of everybody to obey the court order,’’ Kanu said.
One other lawyer, Oluwole Adeshina, also told our reporter that government should look into the matter again and act on time before it got out of hand.
“The judicial arm of government is the last hope of the common man and it needed not to be toyed with,’’ he said.
The Tide reports that the industrial action by JUSUN entered its ninth day on Wednesday.
