NEMA Flags-Off ‘Operation Eagle Eye’
In line with the United
Nations Decade for Action Against Road Crashes which started in 2010, the South-South Zone of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), had flagged off its 2014 “Operation Eagle Eye” campaign last Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by the Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mr Ben Oghenah, the event was carried out at the Agency’s Zonal Office in Port Harcourt to mark the commencement of the operation.
Oghenah charged members of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to obey traffic rules and regulations and also make use of the Emergency numbers made available to the motoring public.
Oghenah disclosed that activities lined up under the campaign include Motor Park Rallies, Surveillance Patrols, Public Enlightenment programmes and deployment of Help Centres at strategic locations to be manned by officers of the Agency supported by sister agencies.
He said that the programme is aimed at checkmating the spate of road traffic which is common during the yuletide season in the country, adding that the operation includes conducting routine surveillance patrols in established traffic corridors in conjunction with sister agencies, such as Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) the Nigeria Police as well as the military.
The exercise is expected to end after the first week of January 2015.
