Group Identifies Obstacle To Zero Gas Flaring
The National Coalition of
Gas flaring and Oil Spills in the Niger Delta NACGOND says the continous reliance by the Nigerian Government on revenue from crude oil and gas is the major handicapped towards the enforcement of the ban on gas flaring in the country.
National coordinator of the coalition, FR Edward Obi, who said this at a one day seminar on Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and climate change mitigation organised by the centre for ethnic and conflict studies, University of Port Harcourt, said that the world can no longer ignore the continous contribution to climate change by the Niger Delta through gas flaring.
He said that because of the devastating effect of it on the environment, the government must now fashion out ways of developing the agricultural and minning industries.
He said that the group will continue its collaboration across the board with the view to increasing it advocacy in sustainable environment.
FR Obi also thanked the centre for its numerous research work on the climate change, stressing that it efforts will go along way to improve the capacities of several groups to improve the environment.
In his welcome address, the Director Centre for Ethnic and Conflict Studies (CENTECS) University of Port Harcourt, Prof Mark Anikpo, said that CENTECS is working with NACGOND to improve awareness on the environment.
Professor Anikpo said that the centre conducted researches and enlightenment on issues of environment.
He said that the seminar sponsored by NACGOND was to address some of the issues involve in climate change, as the effects of climate change are becoming more devastating across the globe.
Prof Anikpo also said that time has come for the international community to ensure the implementation of several protocols towards a reduction in the amount of greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere.
