Clergy Identifies Ways To Support Vulnerable People
The Chairman, Nigeria
Delta Catholic Bishops Forum, His Grace, Archbishop Emeritus, Joseph Edra Ukpo, has called on the conference of the National Coalition on Gas Flaring and Oil Spills in the Niger Delta (NACGOND), to make inputs that would alleviate the pains of the vulnerable in the society.
Archbishop Ukpo who was speaking at the conference of NACGOND held in Calabar, said the theme of the conference, “Oil Theft and Illegal Refining in the context of a changing International Oil Market” was very apt and timely taking into cognizance the myriad of challenges faced by the less privileged and the vulnerable.
Speaking through Reverend Father (RvFr) Peter Abue, Archbishop Ukpo expressed concern over policy formulation that places undue burden on the less privileged, adding, that in the social agenda of the church, the issue of how to protect the vulnerable has always been in the front burner.
Also speaking, the Archbishop said the church would continue to appeal for the promulgation of laws that are favorable to the weakest in the society and appealed that the conference deliberations reflect the church agenda in this regards.
Presenting a paper titled “what is so wrong with Artisanal Refining any way? Economics of Scale versus Inevitable Social Disruption”, Rv. Fr. Edward Obi, National Coordinator, NACGGND, said in the last four decades and more the exploitation of natural resources and the misallocation of profits accruing from these resources has produced effects that have earned Nigeria a negative reputation.
