Ebola:NUT Suspends Teachers’ Day Celebration
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) will not celebrate the 2014 edition of the World Teachers’ Day (WTD).
Chairman of the Rivers State Chapter of the NUT, Chief Godfrey Nwosu, made this known to The Tide in an exclusive interview in his office in Port Harcourt.
According to him, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the body decided in its last meeting on the 16th of September, 2014, to shelve the WTD celebrations as a result of the Ebola Virus Diseases (EVD) threat.
Consequently, he said, in place of the World Teachers’ Day celebration, the NUT leadership across the country has been directed to organise seminar on Ebola Virus Diseases (EVD).
“The NEC saw it that it was very necessary for us to suspend this year’s World Teachers’ Day (WTd). Rather than bring people together and match, we decided to organise health seminars, particularly on Ebola Virus Diseases (EVD).
We reckoned that this will benefit teachers and the populace more,” he said.
The seminar, he continued will hold on a date to be decided in October, but not on the 5th which is the World Teachers Day.
