The Customs Area Controller, (FOU) Zone “C”, Owerri, Victor David Dimka who disclosed this to newsmen in Owerri recently said the cannabis were impounded on the 9th Mile axis of Enugu State, properly concealed in a luxury bus along with other luggage belonging to passengers in the bus, but could not beat the eagle eyes of the Customs men on duty.
Dimka said the confistication was made possible following a tip-off to them, prompting his men to quickly swing into action.
According to him, some other contraband goods included foreign rubber slippers, used computers and used motorcycles, and warned those who are into the business to desist as the zone has become a no-go area for smugglers, their agents and collaborators, adding that his officers and men are now better trained, motivated and equipped with the state of the art gadgets to fight the nation’s criminals where ever they are or route or devise they might use.
In his words, “Despite efforts to reduce smuggling, smugglers have refused to listen to the voice of reason and it is quite unfortunate and disheartening that the deviants have continued in their nefarious trade,” and disclosed that the driver of the luxury bus would be investigated and if found guilty as the prime suspect would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
In his remarks while receiving the seizures on behalf of the chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, the commander of the Agency in Enugu State Command, Anthony Nkem Ohanyere noted that with the collaboration of all, the war against illicit trade would be won, and called for all hands to be on deck.
