RSG Charges VIOs On Road Worthiness Certificate
The Rivers State Govern
ment has called on Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) in the state to ensure that vehicles are truly tested and not merely certified before they are issued road worthiness certificate.
The state Governor, Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi made the call in his goodwill message during the flag-off ceremony of the “Ember Months” Road Safety Campaign at the Rivers Transport Company (RTC) premises in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
Amaechi, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Mr Nwikpa Nukasi, said the VIOs in the state should redouble their efforts to ensure that all vehicles on the road are well certified and approved to be on the road by the assigning officers.
He said the various
agencies of government assigned roles should also ensure safety on the road, and called on the FRSC to properly train drivers before they are issued licences.
According to him, FRSC should collaborate with other law enforcement agencies for the enforcement of the law on drivers driving on the kerb and drainages, adding that the law should be enforced without bias or discriminations ased on externalities.
On the part of government, the state’s chief executive stressed the need for government to provide basic infrastructure to enable the VIOs perform their duties effectively and to provide road signs where necessary.
He enjoined all driving schools in the state to have the basic requirements to conduct drivers training to ensure safety on the roads.
In his own address, the Executive Director RTC, Port Harcourt, Pastor Eyo Bassey, stressed the need to further collaborate with the FRSC to ensure safety and thanked them for chosing the park for the flag-off of the campaign.
