TUC Threatens Showdown Over Power Outage
The Rivers State chapter of
Trade Union Congress (TUC) has threatened a face-off with the new power company the four power consumption company over an alleged increases in bills and poor electricity services in the state.
The union, Comrade Chika Onuegbu, said last weekend at the inaugural Roundtable Business Seminar, with theme: “Build an entrepreneur, Build the Nation” organised by Rivers Entrepreneurs And Investors Forum in Port Harcourt.
According to him, the union would take proactive measures, including strike to bring to an end the alleged fraudulent activities of the power company, after meeting with its national executive of the union soon.
Onuegbu said, the union has received several reports concerning illegal increase rate of electric bills and poor power supply even after collecting such huge amount from the consumers, noting that the activities of the Power Company was affecting business in the state.
The union boss also disclosed pending matter with the Ministry of Commerce and Industries over multiple taxations and illegal collection of registration fee for business premises, noting that registration of business premises is illegal as the law was not in agreement with Nigeria Constitution of 1999.
Comrade Onuegbu, who called on the state House of Assembly to fast track the passage of the multiple taxation bill into law, said multiple taxes has forced many people out of businesses.
He called on governments to come with tax policy that will encourage investors and create an enabling business environment for people in the state.
Also speaking, the President of Rivers Entrepreneurs and Investors Forum (REIF), Mr Ibifiri Bob-Manuel identified lack of law enforcement and implementations as one of the challenges confronting business environment in the state.
