Community Demands Health Centre Completion
The people of Nyokuru
community in Khana Local Government Area have called on the state and the Caretaker Committee Chairman to pay attention to the abandoned Health Centre 20 years after work began on it.
The Health Centre which construction started in 1992 has not been completed after the contractor had put in over 90 per cent of the work project without payment.
The Tide learnt that the Khana Council also named the uncompleted Health Centre after late Squadron Leader, Anthony Dusin who died in an air force plane crash in September 1992.
Some community leaders, Chief S.T Pyagbaru and Chief J.M Abikor had called on the local and the state governments to urgently reconsider the plight of the people and complete the project and pay the contractor for his work to enable people enjoy healthcare treatment.
They regretted that the present Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers His Royal Majesty King G.N.K.Giniwa who was a witness signatory to the contractor then had pleaded with subsequent council chairmen to settle the contractor if they will not continue with the project.
‘’ We call on Governor Chibuike Amaechi to come to the rescue of the community and the contractor who has over 20 years waited patiently for his payment after spending his hard earned money to build the Health Centre’’, he said.
When contacted the Director, Yaako and Sons, Chief G.N.Yaako said the Nyokuru Health Centre contract was awarded to his company via contract number KHANA/CON/44 VOL 111/54 and that the first and second phases were completed but no money was paid to them.
Yaako noted that several appeals were made to subsequent local and state government administrations but nothing has been done to that effect.
The Tide learnt that the community leaders and chiefs have also joined in appealing to the authorities to complete the project as well as pay the contractor to ensure that the project was completed.
