Lawmaker Tasks Agency On Diversification Of Economy
A former Speaker of the
Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Dom Obiekie, has told the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency to live up to expectations in the effort to diversify the Nigerian economy.
Obiekie, who made the call in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, said there was need to shift attention to the solid minerals sector to diversify the economy and foster development.
“I am praying that the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency will do us proud by refocusing our attention to the area of mineral resources.’’
He said that this would help in diversifying the country’s petroleum-dominated economy and curb the nation’s worsening unemployment problem.
According to him, the development of the sector will open prospects for mining, mineral processing, manufacturing of raw materials for local industries and promoting investment.
Obiekie lamented that Nigeria had neglected the development of other non-oil resources.
“Oil has come to be the bane of Nigeria’s development; our policy is misdirected because of over-dependence on oil.
“We have forgotten that this country is blessed with uncountable resources.
Speaking also on the current insecurity in the country, the former lawmaker urged Nigerians to join hands with government to combat terror.
“This is a very unique kind of assault on the people and it requires very unique and concerted efforts to combat it.
He urged Nigerians to stop blame game, saying that the country’s problem was as a result of continuous bastardisation of policies over the years.
“From time immemorial, we have been unfair to this country. What we are seeing today is a collective problem of the populace from the military until today.
“The truth is that we need to make haste and stop the blame game and come together, to stop the country from the verge of serious calamity.’’
Obiekie argued that part of the problems in the country was that “we lied to ourselves and paid lip-service to problems.
