Federation Names 22 Players For African Rugby Tourney
The Nigeria Rugby
Football Federation (NRFF) technical team has named a predominantly home-based 22-man squad to hit closed camp ahead of the 14th African Cup 1C Rugby Tournament.
The Vice President of the Federation, Tunji Fasimoye, made the disclosure in a statement issued in Lagos over the weekend.
He said the tournament would hold in Gaborone, Botswana, from June 13 to 22.
He added that Nigeria’s “Black Stallions” will compete with Botswana, Morrocco, Zambia, Mauritius and Swaziland.
According to him, the Stallions will be motivated so that the boys will go ahead and win the tournament in Gaborone.
“We have carefully selected our best hands based on merit.
“These players have proven themselves in the ongoing South-West and Northern leagues and are fit enough for the task ahead.”
Fasimoye said the Africa Cup is an annual international rugby union tournament for African nations, organised by the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR).
He added that the tournament, as well as the 2012 and 2013 editions of it, would serve as qualifiers for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
He named Sunday Bassey of Cowrie Rugby Football Club (RFC), Lagos, Olatunde Samuel of Royal Stallion RFC, Ilorin, Ibrahim Musa of Kaduna RFC, Kaduna, Friday Solomon of Zaria RFC, Kaduna as part of the 22-man squad.
He said the team also has Azeez Olanrewaju, Nigeria Police RFC, Abubakar Yakubu of Sabongari RFC of Kaduna, and Ambrose Peter of Jos RFC.
