Encourage Women Participation In Boxing – Odunuga
A female boxer, Wuraola
Odunuga, has urged government and stakeholders to encourage and support female boxers in order to discover more grassroots talents among them.
Odunuga made the call in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.
She said the country had a lot of upcoming female talents who needed encouragement and support to showcase their talents.
“We have a lot of female talents that can win laurels and make the country proud in boxing if they are encouraged and given the required training.
“Our female boxers have not really performed in international competitions compared to the male boxers who had made name and are recognised for their brilliant performance worldwide.
“However, our female athletes have been performing excellently in other sports like the track and fields and football.
“For female boxing to succeed, we need cooperation, encouragement and support, and I believe that what a man can do, a woman can do, even better.”
The 60kg-boxer represented the country at the Amateur International Boxing Championship (AIBA) held in Sofia, Bulgaria, but lost on points to Turkey at the quarterfinal stage of the event.
The competition was held at the Armeec Arena in Sofia, Bulgaria, and was the sole Qualifying Event for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games.
