‘Award On MWUN Boss, Well Deserved’
The recent award of “Best
Maritime Man of the year”, by the shipping world, bestored on the President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Tony Emmanuel Nted, has been described as well deserved.
The chairman of the union in Rivers State, Comrade Jonah Jumbo, made the assertion in a chat with The Tide in Port Harcourt, recently.
Jumbo said the numerous achievements by the out-going President-General of the union are second to none, adding that his 12 years in office had records that no one had achieved.
According to him, Nted has transformed the maritime union completely that every member is proud of the accomplishment.
On his achievements, the sate MWUN boss said during his tenure Nted was able to build a befitting Guest House in Abuja, acquired land in Lagos for the building of an Hotel to generate income, some companies like Lamnalco Nig Ltd that were supposed to be in MWUN, but were hijacked by NUPENG are now part of the union through industrial court as the labour law says, “Any sea going vessel belonged to the union called Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria.
He further stated that for easy movement of union members, his administration provided buses for all the branches that everybody is today very proud to be a member of the maritime union, even the Federal Government also accorded it respect as well.
“We expected him to do more but we are crying as his second tenure is coming to an end and our worry has been who to step into his shoes as messiah”.
Jumbo lamented, adding that his wealth of management and wisdom is worthy of commendation as they expected him to do more for the seafarers.
He used the forum to call on the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to fish out those marine companies hiding and doing illegal marine business in Rivers State and Nigeria, disclosing that some companies use expatriates without waiver, urging NIMASA to live up to its billing and send those offenders without proper clearance to where they should belong, although formal report had been lodged with the Agency but no response yet.
