LG Council Provides Jobs For 80 Youths
The Chairman of Ikot
Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, Mr Ufot Udoinyang, said the council had employed 80 youths to maintain security in the area.
Udoinyang made this known in an interview with newsmen in Ikot Abasi.
He stressed that 55 of the youths were directly carrying out surveillance in the area.
He said the strategy was part of youths empowerment programmes, adding that 25 others were engaged to sweep the roads and open blocked drains.
Udoinyang stated that the youths were being paid N20,000 monthly and that the gesture had reduced crime rate in the area.
He said another group of 80 youths were trained in vocational skills such as electrical installations, welding, plumbing, catering services, fashion designing and bead making.
The council boss said that the beneficiaries had since been given starter packs to commence their personal business.
Udoinyang added that his administration would subsequently train the youths in oil and gas related skills.
“I notice that most of our youths in Ikot Abasi did not have the skills needed in the oil companies.
“We want to train them at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, to enable them to obtain the needed certificates for oil and gas jobs.”
He was optimistic that 65 per cent of the unemployed youths would acquire skills and become employable at the end of his tenure in June 2015.
