Monthly Tourney Has Improved Squash Players – PSPAN President
President of the Professional Squash Players Association of Nigeria (PSPAN), Seun Peters, has said that the association’s monthly tournament has helped to improve players’ quality.
PSPAN was formed on November 25, 2012 in Lagos by squash players to bring about regular competitions for players.
This was as a result of the near-absence of regular competitions in the squash circuit.
“Lagos State players and those from neighbouring states have been participating in these monthly competitions since inception, and they have improved tremendously.
“Compared to what is happening in other states, we try as much as possible to encourage players from other states to feature in the competitions to help them become better players.
“The competition is stiff because everybody wants to come and prove a point, it is highly competitive and the turnout has always been fantastic,’’ Peters said.
When asked about the quality of the participating players, he singled out Tunde Ajagbe and Gbenga Adeyi as players who have excelled outstandingly.
“Nobody has won this monthly competition more than Ajagbe and Adeyi so far.
“Adeyi has defied the age theory because, compared to other younger players. He has showed more commitment to the sport, which is rare, even among younger players,’’ the PSPAN president said.
The monthly championship was usually held on the last Saturday of every month at the Apapa Club.
However, following a reversal of that arrangement, the event is now held on a rotational basis among the elite sports clubs in Lagos.
