RSG Cautions Against Building On Drainages
Residents of Rivers
State have been warned to desist from building on drainages and natural canals to avert the incidence of perennial flooding of the State capital.
The Commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning, Dr Tammy Danagogo handed down the warning recently while supervising ongoing canalisation work along Eligbolo, Eliozu, Rumunduru and Eneka axis of the city.
Speaking, Dr. Danagogo thanked the communities for their assistance during the exercise and said that the government was ready to cooperate with them.
He also called on the people to ensure the drains and canals around them were properly cleared, adding that the canalisation exercise and disilting of natural water course was in anticipation of the heavy flooding predicted this year by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and to avert the disaster that might result from the floods.
The Commissioner also warned property developers to always maintain the 6-15 meters statutory set-back from canals in accordance with town planning laws and decried the unwholesome practice of dumping refuse and wastes into drains and canals by some residents.
