Assembly Halts Planned Relocation Of State Library
The Imo House of
Assembly on Thursday called for a halt to the state government’s plan’s to demolish the state library and relocate it.
In a petition raised by Ikenna Emeh (PDP-Isu), the Non Academic Staff Union of the Imo State Library Board had asked the assembly to stop the demolition and relocation plans. The union said the proposed new site was in an obscure location away from the centre of the town and difficult to access.
They also said the proposed building was a residential house and not suited for library purposes as it was not built to house a library.
Simeon Iwunze (PDP-Isiala Mbano), who spoke in favour of the petition, noted that the library should be located within the town where it could be easily accessed. He said proposed site for the relocation was not easy to access and would discourage people from using the facility.
The Deputy Speaker of the assembly, Mr Donatus Ozoemena (APGA-Oru West), who presided over the session, supported the pleas of the petitioners.
The assembly then resolved to write to the office of the governor to stop any plans for the demolition and relocation.
