15 Boxers To Represent Nigeria At Glassgow 2014
At least, 15 male and female boxers will represent Nigeria at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has said.
A board member of the federation, Azania Omo-Agege, said this in an interview with newsmen at the National Open Male and Female Boxing Championships in Lagos.
“We have discovered in this competition, male and female boxers we can rely on for international events such as the Commonwealth Games.
“Our determination is to feature boxers in all the 10 categories at the Games with the aim of wining laurels in most of them.
“Unlike at the 2012 Olympics in London, where we featured only three boxers and came back without a medal, Glasgow Games will be different.
“This time around, we are going to feature in all the available events to ensure that we do not pack our eggs in a basket,” Omo-Agege said.
He said that Nigeria would win medals at the Glasgow Games based on the potential of boxers already discovered at the Lagos championships.
“I can assure you that with the skills being displayed here at the championships, Nigeria will storm the Games with skillful and medal- winning boxers,’’ he said.
He gave the assurance that players selected at the ongoing championships in Lagos would be exposed to foreign tours before the Glasgow Games to sharpen their skills.
The competition, sponsored by the federation’s President, Maj.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, held at the Brai Ayonote Gymnasium, National Stadium, Lagos.
The event, which began on August 16, would ended on August 26.
