Minister Hails Construction Firms Over Road Work
The Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, recently commended Messrs Julius Berger and RCC for mobilising to site to commence the reconstruction and expansion of Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.
Onolememen made the commendation when he paid an unscheduled visit to the site at Sagamu interchange.
“The contract for the expansion and reconstruction of the road has been awarded by the Federal Government.
“The contractors are making preparations for the full commencement of the reconstruction of the expressway,’’ he said.
He expressed happiness that the two contractors had already mobilised to site.
The minister said he inspected the Benin-Ore-Shagamu Expressway adding that the federal government was committed to fixing all highways in the country.
Onolememen, however, said that government was constrained by paucity of funds in the award of road contracts.
“There are quite a lot of roads in Nigeria requiring attention, including Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway.
“The resources available to the Federal Ministry of Works are not enough to fund 20,000 kilometers of federal roads across the country at once.
“We have to prioritise and ensure that the interest of all the six geo political zones is factored in.
“Make no mistake about it, we intend to put all federal roads in good, motorable conditions,’’ he said.
He, however, declined to comment on the project sum, stating that the full details of the contract would be made available in due course.
The minister directed ministry officials to set up a five-foot high monument on the site to alert road users on the commencement of the project.
Onolememen also urged the South West Director, Federal Highways, Alhaji Kabir Abdullahi, and his team to get the drawings of the design to him immediately.
Our correspondent reports that Julius Berger won the contract to reconstruct from the Lagos end to Shagamu interchange while RCC would take the project from the interchange to Ibadan.
