Edo Moves To Check Double Land Allocation
The Edo State Government is to key into the Land and Geographical Information Systems to check double allocation of land in the state.
The Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Mr Donald Boih, said in Benin last Tuesday that the process was already on.
Boih said that apart from checking double allocation of land, it would also fast track the process of land acquisition.
According to him, he has personally visited Lagos and Abuja which are said to be the best places to understudy the process.
He said that the experiences in those places were not different from the intention of the state.
The commissioner blamed the double allocation of land in the state on the intelligence sheet of the ministry.
Boih said that the intelligence sheet was a document used to determine if a plot was already allocated or not before allocation, adding that presently, the intelligence sheet was bad.
He, however, said that government was working round the clock to put the sheet back in order. “Whenever there was application for land in any area, the files concerning the area would be properly scrutinised,’’ he said.
Boih warned land speculators to desist from land racketeering as any person caught would be made to pay the full penalty for the offence.
He said that the ministry was putting measures in place to ensure that lands allocated were developed by their owners within specified period or the owners would risk revocation.
