Shell Donates Safety Equipment To Bayelsa FRSC
Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu, says the company is committed to assisting the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to prevent and curb road accidents in the entire Niger Delta region.
Mr Sunmonu stated this in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State during the official handing over of safety equipment worth millions of naira to the authorities of the FRSC, in the state saying that the provision of the equipment is in continuation of support for the improvement of regulatory road safety management in the state.
Represented by Evans Krukrubo, SPDC Manager, Government Community Relations, Sunmonu said safety is an integral party of SPDC operations in Nigeria, as safety is a way of life and work as it enhances culture of safety within our operations
To this end, he said, the company had provided capacity building workshop for senior officials from traffic management and road safety agencies including FRSC, Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps and Rivers State Traffic Management Authority
“At SPDC we remain committed to working with the state government and FRSC in making a difference to road safety condition in Bayelsa State”, he stated.
The SPDC boss lamented that road crashes remain the leading cause of death by injury with the highest total morality rate coming from our African region.
SPDC, he said, would continue to partner with FRSC in the state, noting that the company had previously supported Rivers State with hand held equipment such as speed guns, traffic cones, breathalyzers and batons.
He declared that “Improving road safety is indeed a share responsibility and called on other multiple sector alliance to support a change in the practices,” stressing that the company’s contribution would enable the enforcement work effectively and perform their roles as well as provide positive impacts on our roads
Receving the equipment, Bayelsa State Sector Commander of FRSC, Vincent Morgan-Jack commended SPDC for being in the forefront of promoting standards on roads safety, saying that the Command has enjoyed tremendous working relationship over the years with Shell in keeping safety standards. He noted that business of safety is for all sundry and not only SPDC.
He, however, said FRSC is faced with the problems of lack of truck vehicles to tow broken down vehicles in the East/West road and called on the management of SPDC and other companies to assist take the challenges.
He, therefore, appealed for the provision of two truck vehicles to tow broken down cars in the busy East/West road and ambulances to ease our operations and reduce casualties.
