Boat Drivers Embark On Strike
Commercial boat drivers in Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State have embarked on strike to protest the criminal activities that have affected their business operations recently.
According to The Tide report, the strike started yesterday and is aimed at conscientising and sensitising the various security organs of government, as well as the Akuku-Toru Local government council as well as the state government and the general public of the numerous things that they have suffered on the sea.
Speaking to journalists on the issue, chairman of the boat drivers association in the are, Mr Sobigba Awara said that the boat drivers in his area of operations have suffered numerous attacks by sea pirates where some of their members had several body injuries and loss of their hard-earn monies.
Awara explained that several reports have been made to both the state and local government as well as the police, but that no meaningful step had been taken to check the activities of these pirates in the area.
The commercial boat drivers chairman further stated that the decision to go on strike was to serve as a “wake-up” call to both the government, the security agencies and the public on the plight and danger they go through on the river.
