Ikuru Reassures On Resettling Flood Victims
Rivers State Flood Relief Committee says the process of resettling those affected by the recent flood disaster in the state is the major challenge it is facing now.
Chairman of the committee and state Deputy Governor, Engr. Tele Ikuru, said this yesterday while receiving a donation from the chairman of the State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Monsignor John Wangbu, on behalf of the 2012 Christian pilgrims to Israel, in Government House, Port Harcourt.
Engr. Ikuru stated that the committee was not relenting in its efforts at tackling the challenges of the post-flood era and resettling victims of the flood in the four local government areas of the state.
Noting that “ the after-effects of the flood disaster was more challenging than managing the people at the camps”, he pointed, out that the people had lost their accommodation, means of livelihood, among others.
The deputy governor commended the board and the pilgrims for their generosity and for coming to the aid of the flood victims, stating that “it takes a lot for someone to remember you in your period of discomfort. Ikuru called on other public-spirited individuals and corporate organizations to emulate the step taken by the board to come to the aid of the victims.
Earlier, chairman of the board, Monsignor Wangbu, who had presente4d a cheque of N500,000 to the flood victims through the committee, said “the 2012 christian pilgrims to Israel were saddened over the devastation occasioned by the flood disaster in the state”, stressing that “in a bid to show love and care they decided to make a cash donation to them to cushion the effects in the post flood exercise.
He promised that the board was “willing to go the extra mile in partnering with the state government in the areas eemed necessary to create a better life for the people”, acknowledging that the post-flood era was the most difficult aspect of managing the flood crisis.
