‘Rivers Schools To Adopt ICT-Driven Scheme’
Rivers State Government has indicated its interest to adopt Daar Education Services (DES) programme in schools across the state.
Governor Chibuike Amaechi gave the hint on Wednesday when he played host to the Chairman and top management of DAAR Communications Plc in Government House, Port Harcourt.
He said the state government is ready to adopt the ICT-driven education tool, since it would help improve teaching and learning, adding that he would direct the Commissioner for Education to study the programme for subsequent adoption into the teaching scheme.
Amaechi further said, “we will be glad that you work with us to help us find solution, our own objective is to find the solution to the problems in the education sector to grow, and we are currently spending a lot of money in that regard.”
The governor lamented the falling standard of education, noting that the recent entrance examination into Model Secondary Schools reveals students’ deficiency in science and Mathematics subjects.
He expressed the hope that DES would help reduce government expenses in sending students on foreign scholarships.
“We want to place Rivers State such that in the next 15 years, we can begin to transfer knowledge to other parts of the economy,” he stressed.
He also used the visit to call for more attention in education, arguing that the growth of the Nigerian economy lay on the ability of stakeholders to produce skilled manpower in all sectors.
Earlier in his remarks, chairman of DAAR Communications Plc, Chief Raymond Dokpesi said the DES was a collaboration between the Federal Government and the company to utilise ICT-based technology to deliver education in all parts of the country.
He explained that the scheme had become imperative due to the declining education standards coupled with the huge failure recorded in public exams in Nigeria.
“DES solution will drastically reduce cost problems, especially in different terrains since teachers cannot move into these areas,” Chief Dokpesi observed.
He lauded the huge investments and upgrading in educational facilities by the Governor Amaechi-led administration, and pledged the support of DAAR Communications in media publicity and collaboration to make the vision successful.
