Rivers
RSHA To Sanction Non-Performing LG Chairman
There are indications that non-performing local government
chairmen in Rivers State may be sanctioned by the Rivers State House of Asembly
(RSHA) after the on-going projects inspections across the 23 local government
areas by the House Committee on Local Government Affairs.
The Committee Chairman, Hon Lucky Odili dropped the
hint recently in an interview with The
Tide after the inspection of projects in Tai and Andoni local government areas
of the state.
According to him, the era has passed when the state
legislature watched chairmen running the councils as private business.
Hon. Odili explained that the on-going was not to witch-hunt
anybody, but to let council chairmen know that council business is not private
business.
“We are not embarking on the inspection tour to indict anybody,
but our aim is to let council business
know that council business is not private business for a chairman to run as he
like.
“We are also touring round to see how the chairmen translate their electioneering campaign
promises to better the lives of the rural dwellers” Hon. Odili
explained.
The House Committee chairman called on councilors across the
23 local government areas to perform their duty properly by monitoring closely projects execution in compliance with
the budget approved for such projects and programmes.
Earlier, the chairman of Andoni Local Government Council
Hon. Orom Nte said, in less than
eighteen months, the council has linked all Andoni Communities to the national grid, to ensure steady power
supply the area, particularly the communities linked to the Unity road.
Hon. Orom further explained that the council also
constructed senior staff quarters, provided free school books, uniforms among
other leaving materials to boost
education for less-privileged
people in the area.
