Jonathan Explains Reading Culture Programme
President Goodluck Jonathan has said that the “Bring back the book” programme initiated by his administration is aimed at reviving reading culture among pupils and students across the nation.
Jonathan who stated this in Yenagoa, last Thursday, said it was in pursuance of the policy that Federal Ministry of Education has been donating books, instructional and lecture materials to schools across the country, pointing out that with this policy, he stressed that books are going to arose some reading culture among the youths.
Represented by his Minister of State for Education Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike, the President spoke in Yenagoa at the formal launch of the “Bring back the book” programme in the state, said that the future was in the book and the children and therefore anything possible must be done to creat that awareness.
“They should do everything to protect their future. The future is in their hands,” he said.
At least , 25 selected private and public secondary school students participated in the event, as laptops were distributed to some Non-Governmental Organisations(NGOs) based in Yenagoa.
Earlier, Special Adviser to the President on Research and Documentation,Oronto Douglas, had said “Bring back the book” initiative was Jonathan ‘s brainchild which was formally launched in December at Abuja.
“The President believes the secrets of governance ,amazing discoveries ,development ,progressive management principles and every other desire of any nation are hidden in books ,books written over generations and that only reading can the leaders of tomorrow nurture dreams and values that can change society,”he explained.
“It would revitalise the reading culture ,with knowledge serving as a tool for development and projecting the nation’s culture for survival ,sustenance and protection.Organising book readings in educational institutions at all levels across the country establishing of Bring back the book in educational institutions to serve as hubs for development of intellectual capacity of the youths”.
Among Nolly artists that graced the occasion included Omoni Oboli,Desmond Elliot,Omotola Ekeinde,Dakore Egbuson and Lambert Ototo.
