Group Engages Legislature On Budget Implementation
The Know Your Budget (KYB) group, a civil society organisation, last Thursday resolved to engage the Kaduna State House of Assembly on how to make budgets work in the state.
Mr Abel Adejor, the KYB Spokesman, said in Kaduna that the group has adopted more pragmatic strategies to ensure the success of annual fiscal policies.
Adejor explained that most citizens did not know that the constitutional role of legislators was to make people-oriented laws and check the excesses of the executive through oversight functions.
“We (KYB members) have just met to engage our lawmakers and the citizens on how to make the budget processes successful in the state.
“We want to cultivate the trust and confidence of the people in the legislature after educating both citizens and lawmakers on the budgeting process.’’
Adejor said the group would produce and circulate information and education materials for public sensitisation, enlightenment and mobilisation on budget issues.
According to him, members of the organisation will also collate “authenticate budget data’’ and analyse same for the benefit of the government and the populace.
“Besides, we will engage the media on budget matters at various level as part of our civic education programme.
“Our objective is to ensure that the lawmakers, MDAs and others stakeholders properly understand budget processes, appropriation, implementation and oversight functions.
“Our major goal is to achieve an effective budget tracking, monitoring and evaluation aimed at promoting good governance.’’
Adejor said the KYB would partner with other civil society organisations, opinion leaders, professional bodies and social influencers to drive the project.
