Motorists Hail Suspension Of New Number Plates
A cross section of motorists in Port Harcourt have hailed the move by the National Assembly over the suspension of the issuance of new vehicle number plates and drivers licence by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), nationwide.
The Tide correspondent in a chat with motorists gathered that the exercise was ill-time and unnecessary.
The motorists who barred their minds said the Federal Road Safety Corps should concentrate on ensuring safety on the roads and reduce the rate of road accidents in the country.
A company driver, Mr. Eyitayo Tunde said it is wrong for the Federal Road Safety Corps to start such an exercise as the country is still passing through the scarcity of fuel in the country.
Mr. Tunde said the suspension had given a lot of car owners a gish of relist as many charged for the number plate and the licence is exorbitant, and commended the National Assembly for the move.
Mr. Tom Suku Woloye, a commercial driver said the issuance of new number plates by the Federal Road Safety Corps was a means of extortion from the common men (drivers), as the old number plates or licences are still in use and that the suspension is in a right direction.
Another driver, Mr. Alloyiou Okorie said that the FRSC supposed to give the new number plates to owners of new vehicle, adding that” there is no need for new plate number to an old bus”.
According to Mr. Okorie, the suspension has again assured that the present government has the interest of the masses, because if it is not suspended, the burden would be felt greatly by the commuters as all drivers would like to increase their fares coupled with the present fuel situation in the state.
Mada Felicia Soberekon, a private car owner also lauded the effort of the National Assembly, saying they have done a good job that led gladden the minds at the motoring public, as she led been thinking of how to raise the amount and go for the payment before its deadline of August this year given by the Federal Road Safety Corps.
Meanwhile, efforts to get reaction from the sector commander, Federal road Safety Corps (FRSC), Rivers State command, Mrs Mary Egba proved abortive as the PRO of the command, Ugwamba said the new sector commander is yet to settle down officially.
