Amaechi Orders Demolition Of Structures In Igwuruta
The Executive Governor of Rivers State, Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, has ordered the immediate demolition of houses and other structures within the Igwuruta roundabout in Ikwerre Local Government Area, that are close to the road.
Governor Amaechi who handed down the order to the chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Welendu Amadi when he visited the scene of the fire incident that claimed about six lives and left several others wounded in the early hours of Saturday, which was ignited by a petroleum tanker, said that the demolition exercise must be carried out without delay.
The governor who was displeased with the fatality of the accident that claimed the lives of an entire family of six, including mother and father, also instructed that no trader should be allowed to do business within the marked area.
According to the governor, an order had been initially given for the demolition of the structures because of their closeness to the road, when he was the speaker of the House of Assembly, and that few weeks ago, a similar instruction had been given.
He expressed regret, that the instruction was yet to be carried out before the incident occurred, pointing out that such incidents could have been avoided, if the instructions had been carried out.
A petroleum tanker fully loaded with petrol was, in the early hours of Saturday, involved in an accident, and later exploded and ignited fire on the buildings around the Igwuruta round-about.
The incident got many people injured, while a family of six, including the father and mother also lost their lives.
