Enugu Encourages Schools On Inter-House Sports
The Enugu State Government has disbursed money to 305 public secondary schools to organise inter-house sports competitions.
A statement from the Ministry of Youth and Sports said on Thursday in Enugu that the competitions would hold between February 20 and February 24 in the schools.
The statement said the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Chijioke Agu, made the disclosure while addressing school principals who had come to collect their cheques.
It said the funds were disbursed based on the proportion of students in each of the schools but did not disclose the amount given to the schools.
The statement said the competition would enable the ministry to breed new athletes from the grass roots in preparation for the 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos State in December.
“The competition is a turnaround event geared toward rekindling the interest of youths in sports.
“I also appeal to the principals to ensure that the competition is well organised and keenly contested among students in their schools,” it quoted Agu as saying.
The statement quoted the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Nwoha Aneke, as saying the fund was for them to mark fields, purchase prizes and trophies, equipment and other logistics.
Aneke, who is the Chairman, Inter-Ministerial Committee on Inter-House Sports, said the technical committee in conjunction with the games masters and mistresses would select young athletes discovered during the competitions.
