Sea Pirates Strike Again One In Bayelsa
At least one person lost his life and properties worth millions of Naira were carted away when suspected sea pirates attacked a commercial speed boat along Okobotuo fishing settlement along the Akassa – Yenagoa routes in Bayelsa State recently.
The Tide gathered that the sea Pirate who came in a speed boat fully armed with sophisticated weapons violently accosted the innocent commuters, who were returning home with their goods, during which they shot and killed one of the passengers.
Following this development, it was further gathered that the people of the coastal settlement of Akassa and its environs in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa have raised an alarm over the rising cases of deadly pirates attacks on their waterways and the attendant loss of innocent lives.
To this end, the leadership of Akassa community had in a petition sent to the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State, Mr. Hillary Okpara condemned the increasing wave of sea piracy.
The people of Akassa in the petition through the Chairman, Akassa National Council of Chiefs, Chief Franco Samson-Emoh entitled “menace of sea pirates on the Akassa-Yenagoa route”, stated that the activities of the sea pirates and the resulting deadly effects are no longer news, but the period of attacks lauched are now a source of concern to the people of the area.
They have also condemned the acts and called on the authorities to intensify action in bringing the perpetrators to book to save lives and properties of the citizenry.
The Tide also gathered that three Policemen attached to the Marine Division of the Bayelsa Police Command were allegedly shot dead by suspected rampaging pirates along Nembe Creek in Bayelsa State.
It was learnt that the deceased were with their patrol team when the armed gunmen numbering 20, ambushed them and opened fire on them.
Our correspondent reports that the clash which took place along Serene mangrove axis lasted for several hours, although the casualty figure on the side of the pirates was not known.
The Commissioner for Police, Bayelsa State, Mr. Hillary Okpara could not be reached for confirmation.
