A’Ibom NLC Endorses Planned Strike By Teachers
The Akwa Ibom chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said in Uyo recently that it endorsed a planned indefinite strike by primary school teachers in the state over non-payment of salaries.
Its Chairman, Mr Unyime Usoro lamented that the teachers were, among others, owed arrears of the N18,000 minimum wage, which other civil servants had been paid since September.
Our Correspondent reports that the teachers, under the aegis of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) have served the state government a seven-day notice of the strike .
“The other grievances are non-payment of October and November salaries, leave grant for 2011 and non-release of subvention to school heads,” Usoro said.
“We have had meetings with the leadership of NUT in the state on the issue and we have brought the matters to the attention of the Head of Service and Accountant-General of the state.
“Unfortunately, nobody in government circle has come out to address the issues. It is becoming recurrent; the teachers are always treated last, making them feel like second class citizens. It is humiliating,” Usoro stressed.
Speaking to newsmen via telephone, the state NUT Secretary, Mr Sam Umo-Inyang, said that the teachers would not go back on their position except the state government met all their demands.
In a reaction, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour and Productivity, Mr Ime Umoh, told newsmen that the delay in the payment of the October salary for the teachers arose from mistakes spotted in the payment vouchers.
“As I speak to you now, government has released money for payment of October salaries alongside the leave grants.
“The arrears of N18, 000 minimum wage will be paid along with the November salaries; you know we had delay in payment of statutory allocations caused by the disagreement at the Federal Allocation Account Committee,” Umoh said.
On the non-release of subventions to the schools, Umoh said he had met with the state Commissioner for Education over the issue and that the release would be made soon.
“This government is labour-friendly and so, we cannot afford to have any strike,” Umoh said.
