Navy Impounds Three Oil Bunkering Vessels In Bayelsa
The Nigerian Navy has expressed concern over the increased activities in illegal bunkering business along Niger Delta sea routes inspite of its effort to curb the menace.
Commanding Officer of the Forward Operation Base(FOB),Formoso,near Brass,Capt. Aminu Hassan stated this while parading 11 suspected oil thieves ,three vessels and two wooden boats that conveyed adulterated petroleum products before journalists.
Captain Hassan said the Navy has destroyed at least 55 illegal refineries and 18 large wooden boats containing 400 drums of illegally refined diesels and crude oil in the last one month.
He gave the name of the marine vessels as MT Bestkid,MT Victor One and MT Rahh saying that the suspects arrested along Sangana and River Nun,were handed over to operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) Tuesday for prosecution.
The Naval commander told journalists that the Navy has increased its operations in the creeks and waterways aimed at curbing illegalities in the area.
Hassan revealed that more warships have been deployed while the Naval helicopters are also on surveillance above the waterways on daily basis.
He said as Navy survelliance in the high seas gradually picked up, movement of people and goods are now high in the area.People are carrying out legitimate businesses, while some others are taking advantage of what is happening to perpetrate criminality.
According to him, the command have been directed by the Naval high command to step up operations by checking illegal activities along the waterways.
All the arrested persons were handed over to the officials of the EFCC during the event for proper investigations and prosecution.
A representative of the EFCC, Ade Haastrup,said the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded on the matter saying the impounded vessels would remain in the custody of the Navy because his agency has no facility to keep them.
