Mrs Sylva Tasks Women On Cancer Screening
Wife of the Bayelsa State Governor,Alayingi Sylva, has described cancer as a preventable but killer disease that has claimed the life of many women in recent time through cervical and breast cancer infections.
The Governor’s wife stated this in Yenagoa, during the “Walk for Life Against Cancer” programme ,saying that the week -long event was aimed at creating awareness of the killer disease among the women folks.
Several women , including the Governor ‘s wife marched through the streets of Yenagoa to create awareness on the fight against cancer.
While stressing that cancer was worst than HIV/AIDS disease, Alayingi urged the women to take advantage of the free cancer screening programme and shun being ignorant.
Alayingi said HIV/AIDS diseases could be administered on ante-retroviral drugs and still live their normal lives ,but it is not so for cancer patients.
“I’ve seen many people that died of cancer. I’ve visited a woman currently in the hospital. As I walked into the hospital to see the cancer patient, I could not sleep throughout that night. All I could do was to encourage the patient to pray with her and her family. It could happen to anybody.”
According to the Governor’s wife, if the cancer diseases was detected early enough , the patient could not have been lying in that hospital.
Alayingi enjoined female teenagers in the state to embrace the free vaccination against breast and cervical cancer sponsored by her Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO),Centre for Gender Values.
Alayingi therefore , urged women and female teenagers in secondary schools in the state to undertake screening of breast and cervical cancer for early detection.
