Bayelsa Guber Polls PDP May Dump Sylva
The national secretariat of
Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), may have yielded to pressure from political leaders from Bayelsa State to dump the governor, Chief Timpre Sylva in next year’s governorship election in the state.
Already steps have been taken to dismantle the governor’s hold on the party’s apparatus in the state; one of this being the removal of Chief Darius Obiene, as the acting state chairman of the party.
A source close to the party also told The Tide that the National Secretariat is demanding a substantive chairman who should be different from Obiene who initially was elected vice chairman, but assumed the position of acting chairman, when the incumbent, Chief Rufus Abadi left the party in controversial circumstances to vie for the senatorial seat of Bayelsa Central under the flagship of Labour Party.
Chief Obiene, a close relation of the governor who had been acting as chairman for close to a year, was seen as obstacle in the fight to remove Sylva by the opposition members of the party.
Already, about five persons which includes a member of House of Representatives, an Ambassador, a former local government chairman, a minister and other candidate have been lined up to take over from Sylva.
The Tide gathered that this week was given as deadline for the submission of the name of the substantive chairman, failure to heed to the demand could make the National Secretariat to make their choice.
This new development is said to be causing tension in the party, and Sylva’s supporters are having sleepless night over the fate of their principal.
Consequently, Sylva on his part is not taking the development lightly as he has been going round to seek support for his second term bid.
The meeting of South-South Governors last week was one of the avenue, the embattled governor used to plead his cause even though one of his colleagues, Imoke of Cross River, is also facing similar situation.
If Darius Obiene is replaced, then the opposition would have secured a major point, but the aides of the embattled governor said Sylva is on top of the situation, and there is nothing to panic.
