DG Hails WAS On Maritime Dev
The West Atlantic Shipyard (WAS), located at the Federal Ocean Terminal, Onne in Rivers State, has been commended for its contributions to the development of maritime activities in Nigeria.
The Director General of Nigeria Maritime Administrator and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Mr. Patrick Akpobolokemi who made the commendation during a visit to the company as part of activities marking his maiden official tour of maritime facilities at the Onne ports expressed satisfaction with the activities of WAS, especially on manufacturing of boat at their office.
Mr. Akpobolokemi said with this development, he was optimistic that they would soon go into building ships and bigger vessels for the sector.
According to him, “I am happy that West Atlantic Shipyard (WAS) is manufacturing boats, that means they have started from somewhere, and will progress into ship building, and appealed to stakeholders to encourage the company to achieve greater heights.
He also lauded them for keying into the Nigeria Local Content Act (NLCA), and the Cabotage Law, calling on others to borrow a leaf.
Earlier, the Deputy General Manager of WAS, Mr. Martin Dessenni highlighted the operational activities of the company when it commenced with the fabrication of four units of 18 meters length overall Aluminum (LOA) sulfur crew boat, adding that they had since completed and delivered 25 meters LOA, 34 LOA as well as catamaran crew boats.
Mr. Dessenni noted that a good number of skilled workers abound in the country pointing out that the company had experienced fabricators, welders, pipe fitters, marine engineers and mechanical fitters, and thanked the NIMASA boss for the visit. The director general of NIMASA also visited Intels Logistics Services at the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT) and NIMASA office at Federal Lighter Terminal (FLT) all at Onne, Rivers State.
