Diete-Spiff’s Record, Unbeatable – Wayas
Former Senate President of Nigeria, Dr. Joseph Wayas, says that the government and leadership of King Alfred Diete-Spiff in the governance of old Rivers State is yet to be beaten by successive administrations in the state.
Dr. Wayas made the assertion while speaking as chairman during a public presentation of the biography of King Alfred Diete-Spiff: The Vision and Realism of a Statesman, at Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt.
The former Senate President said King Diete-Spiff then a Naval Commander at 24 years tackled with precision the development challenges and security of lives and property to the point where after leaving office in 1975, no other administration had been able to rival the record.
Dr. Wayas who was represented by a former Military Governor in the state, Capt Sam Ewang (rtd.), said the towering achievements of Diete-Spiff had continued to serve as a yardstick to measure political and governmental performance in Nigeria.
He urged Nigerians to cherish the values of the nation so that the labours of her heroes past shall not be in vain, noting that corruption, poor management structure, decaying infrastructure, bomb blasts, kidnapping, threats by terrorists and all manner of vices would not move the country forward.
The former federal lawmaker also described the Twon Brass born traditional ruler as a role model par excellence, an all-rounder who towered where others failed to tread, and thanked the authors for putting together the book in honour of an achiever, that would be remembered by generations to come.
The reviewer of the book, Prof. Steve Azaiki, said Diete-Spiff harnessed the human potentials available to have one of the best State Executive Council members that produced the desired results which posterity would continue to remember.
In a welcome speech, the Chairman, Niger Delta Forum Study Group, Dr. Ambily Etekpe, said the book was a celebration of the exploits of a young man with a lion heart, who assigned himself the task of liberation and developing his people when he became the pioneer Military Governor of old Rivers State on May 27, 1967, at the age of 24 years.
The event was graced by people from all walks of life, eminent Nigerians including Arewa Consultative Forum, represented by its Secretary, Col. Sheilk Musa Shehu.

LP Crisis: Ex-NWC Member Dumps Dumps Abure Faction
Mr Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, noted that the party had 34 elected members in the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members at the state Houses of Assembly after the 2023 general elections.
“Now we lost all of them,” he said. “I don’t think we have as many as five members in the National Assembly.”
The former national officer of the LP talked to journalists in Abuja and said he chose to join the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi-Usman because they are now the officially recognized leaders of the Party.
“I chose to work with the caretaker committee to help save the Labour Party, for the benefit of the party. I also want to use this chance to ask my colleagues at the national, state, and local government levels to come together and help rebuild our party.
“Another election is around the corner. We lost everything we have. They have left to other political parties. So I’ll reach out to all my friends in the other group to get together and work on making this party stronger again.
“The caretaker committee has formed a reconciliation committee. Let’s come together and talk so that we can restore the first opposition political party in Nigeria.”
Mr Ojukwu, who was part of the Julius Abure’s group, said there are no more factions in the LP.
He added, “There is a court ruling, and since it is valid, the right people are in the correct positions.”
He urged Barr Abure and others to drop the legal cases they have filed because they are not helping the party.
“Litigations are killing political parties”, he said. “They’ve seen many political parties disappear because of legal battles, and the Labor Party is losing support every day, which makes me feel sad.”
Mr Ojukwu said he did not think joining the Senator Nenadi-Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure group, describing himself as “the oxygen” of that faction.
“I’m with this group because of the verdict. But I never betrayed anybody. Rather, I was betrayed,” he added.
