ICPC Advises NAFDAC Staff To Shun Corruption
The Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU) of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has implored NAFDAC staff in South-South zone to shun corruption and other related tendencies in their official dealings.
A deputy director in NAFDAC and chairman of ACTU, Mr. Ibrahim Ali who made the charge at a sensitisation workshop for staff of the zone said the body which is an initiative of ICPC, and established in all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) has the mandate to detect and expose corruption in the agency wherever it rears its ugly head.
The deputy director said apart from sensitisation workshops which have been held in Lagos, Abuja, North-East and South-South zones, they have adopted the use of staff pay slips to disseminate the anti-corruption campaign.
The ICPC chairman represented by Mr. Dio Emmanuel from ICPC headquarters Abuja, in his speech entitled, “Corruption, Economic and Financial Crimes Genesis, Patterns, Trends and Consequences,” traced the genesis of corruption back to colonial era where the colonial masters used personnel that were unknown by the people and they ended up extorting them under the flawed indirect rule system adding that the pervasive nature of corruption during civilian rule led to military interventions which also ended up being more corrupt than the regimes they came to correct.
He urged all Nigerians to join the fight against corruption, identifying corruption as the major cause of poverty.
The ICPC boss further noted that NAFDAC fight against fake drugs is also part of anti-corruption drive; warning that those involved in corruption risk jail terms ranging from one to 10 years upon conviction.
He praised the achievements of NAFDAC as a worthy partner in the anti-corruption crusade disclosing that the agency has no corruption issue with the commission.
At the interactive session, NAFDAC staff deplored the lack of transparency that usually pervades some government ministries and establishments and urged the commission to check the negative trend.
