New Federal Universities Seek PTDF’s Support

The vice chancellors of the nine newly created federal universities, have solicited for the support of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) in the development of the institutions.

The vice chancellors made the call in Abuja during a courtesy visit to the PTDF Executive Secretary, Mr Muttaqua Darma.

Prof Chinedu Nebo, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Oye Ekiti, who spoke on behalf of other vice chancellors, said the PTDF was cardinal to the growth of the institutions.

He stressed the need for the fund to help the new universities in the areas of information and communications technology (ICT) and training of personnel.

Darma, in his response, said that the fund would be ready to collaborate with the universities to fast track the goals for which the universities were set up.

He, however, called on the vice chancellors to channel their request through the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

He said that the fund was committed to the development of tertiary education but stressed that no provision was made for the new universities in the 2011 budget.

Present at the occasion were Prof. Geoffrey Okogbaa of Federal University, Wukari, Taraba; Prof. James Ayatse of Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State; Prof. Abdulmumini Rafindadi of Federal University, Lokoja.

Others are Prof. Mohammed Farouk of Federal University Kashere, Gombe; Prof. Ekanem Braide of Federal University Lafia and Prof. Jibrila Amin of the Federal University, Dutse.

The new universities are expected to commence activities in September.

Rivers State Begins 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination Wednesday

The Rivers State Ministry of Education has announced that the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will officially commence on Wednesday,  2026, across all public and private schools in the state.
In a statement issued by the Director of Examinations and Records, Pastor Gideon Nwachukwu Uboh, on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, says school authorities across all Local Government Areas have been advised to ensure that their students are adequately prepared for the examination.
The statement further directed that schools in all Local Government Areas, except Obio/Akpor, should collect and return examination materials through their respective Zonal Education Offices.
It further directed Schools within the Obio/Akpor Zone to collect and return examination materials at the following custodial centres:
Obio/Akpor Zone I: Community Secondary School, Okoro-Nu-Odo
Obio/Akpor Zone II: State Primary School I, Rumuapara, Obio/Akpor Zone III: Community Secondary School, Ozuoba.
The Ministry also disclosed that the Rivers State Government has paid the examination fees for all candidates in public schools. It warned that any principal or teacher found extorting money from students in public schools under any guise will be sanctioned in accordance with the law.

FPOG Bonny Announces Resumption Date For Second Semester Academic Session

The Management of the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny, (FPOG) has announced the resumption of second semester from Monday 29th of June 2026.
A statement signed by Mr Anthony Ogbe, Senior Assistant Registrar/public Relations officer and made available to the tide advise.
Students to resume as announced and update their course registrations.
 The statement further call them to take note of all academic deadlines for the semester , adding that timely resumption is essential to achieving the stated academic objectives.
According to the statement ,” the Polytechnic remains committed to academic excellence, innovation, and bridging the gap between theory and practice. Management has provided the necessary resources and environment to support staff and students in delivering impactful solutions.”

RSU Tightens Campus Driving Rules After Student’s Death

The management of Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, has announced stricter regulations on vehicular movement within the institution following the death of a campus resident, Miss Eno Udoson.
In a press release dated June 24, 2026, and signed by the Acting Registrar, Dr. Idanyingi I. Daminabo, the university said Udoson died on Tuesday, June 23, after she was allegedly struck by a vehicle driven recklessly by two students.
The institution identified the students as Darlington Kosi Onuaku of the Department of Development and Communication Studies and Obinna Daniel Ikechi of the Department of Computer Science. According to the university, both students have been arrested and handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
RSU management expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended its condolences to the deceased’s family and loved ones.
Following an emergency management meeting held on June 24, the university announced a series of measures aimed at improving safety on campus.
Under the new directives, undergraduate students are prohibited from driving personal vehicles into the campus between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Students who bring personal vehicles to the university must park them at the designated car park near the main entrance and use the institution\’s shuttle buses within the campus.
The university also directed that only postgraduate and Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) students with valid university identity cards would be permitted to drive personal vehicles within the campus.
Management further warned that any student caught engaging in reckless driving would face suspension, disciplinary action and the impoundment of their vehicle.
In addition, visiting hours at university hostels have been fixed to end at 6:00 p.m. daily for security reasons, while the approved speed limit on campus has been set at 30 km/h on major roads and 20 km/h within residential areas.
The university said the measures are intended to strengthen campus safety and prevent a recurrence of such a tragic incident.
