Maritime Chief Hails New Cargo Clearance Method
Group Executive Director of Genesis Worldwide Shipping Company, Mr Maxwell Ihenacho, says the one-stop-shop cargo examination scheme being proposed by the Apapa Custom Command would reduce corruption.
Ihenacho told newsmen in Lagos on Thursday that the initiative would eliminate illegal charges by government agencies at the port.
He said that the one-stop-shop cargo examination would involve all securities agencies jointly examining cargoes at the same time at the port.
Ihenacho said that there were too many agencies at the port, alleging that some agencies often brought frivolous allegations to exploit importers.
“Since all the agencies will come together to carry out examination of cargoes, there will not be any room for illegal charges and unfounded allegations,” he said.
He said that activities of some of these agencies contributed to the delay in cargo clearance.
Ihenacho commended the management of Nigeria Customs Service for the initiative.
He said that the initiative would assist importers and agents as well as promote the growth of the economy on the long run.
The Tide recalls that stakeholders in the maritime sector accepted June 27 as the take-off date for the one-stop-shop cargo examination scheme.
Mr Idris Suleiman, Custom Area Controller in Apapa Command, said that any government agency not represented during cargo examination under the scheme would have no right to conduct separate examination.
Suleiman said that any agent not present at the examination bay would be doing so at his or her own risk.
Mr Timi Bomodi, Public Relations Officer of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Apapa Area 1 Command, said that the customs had conducted a test run of the scheme in preparation for its take-off.
He said that all government agencies in charge of cargo examination had been informed.
